The book signing for "Falconry - Myth, Legend, History," written by Vitold Košir and Sanja Perić Gavrančić, was held at the Croatian State Archives on Wednesday, September 11. Over a hundred guests attended the event, where Falconer Košir, a leading figure in falconry, gathered fellow falconers and hunters for the launch. Notable attendees included Hrvoje Kukas, the secretary of the Croatian Hunting Federation, and Nina Obuljen Koržinek, the Minister of Culture. The book, which is 50 pages long, contains meticulously researched historical records about falconry. In 2021, this compilation was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The book explores historical references to falconry, including accounts of falconers in the retinues of King Tomislav and King Petar Krešimir IV dating back to 1070. It also delves into the mythical narrative of the god Jaril engaging in hunting with a falcon and a greyhound. Additionally, the book features the oldest known depiction of a falconer in a hunting scene, found in an 8th-century BC relief from present-day Iraq. The authors meticulously examined ancient sources and records from the Duke's Court of the Republic of Dubrovnik, detailing expenditures on falconry equipment and the training of falcons and hawks. Moreover, the book provides insight into the representation of falconry in literature and fine art, as well as the evolution of modern falconry. Overall, "Falconry - Myth, Legend, History" is a rich and comprehensive publication offering a deep exploration of the subject.
